Overview

Artificial intelligence is often portrayed as a major and growing threat to the environment—consuming vast amounts of energy, water, and accelerating climate change. But how accurate is that narrative? Here at San Francisco State University, the environmental impact from AI and the data centers that power this technology are cited as a major issue and concern.

In this talk, Andy Masley, independent researcher and writer exploring AI, sustainability, and energy systems, explores the environmental impact of AI through a data-driven lens, examining common assumptions, headlines, emerging research, and the full lifecycle of AI systems—from training to deployment. His work broadens the view of widely held beliefs, highlighting where concerns are well-founded, and identifying where the conversation may be missing important context.

This webinar is open to all San Francisco State University faculty, students, and staff to hear a perspective on AI’s impact on the environment for a critical review of the tradeoffs between risk and opportunity and to develop a more nuanced understanding of AI’s place among broader environmental impacts.
